The Path
Just like many other people, my life started on a more traditional path: I completed college, worked my way up in a few different careers, and got myself to a point where I was “doing well.” I was making a fabulous income ($150K yr) and living debt free. Even though I was experiencing “success,” I realized early on the path I was following was not going to make me truly happy. I could see my life heading in a direction that was shaped more by other people’s rules and expectations than my own. I knew, deep down, I wanted something more extraordinary; I wanted a life that also included fun, growth, adventure and meaning.
I have always loved to travel, so I took some time off to explore the world. This one decision transformed me in ways I never expected. As I visited the far corners of the world, the experiences I had and the insight I gained through these adventures changed me forever. From volunteering for Mother Theresa’s Charities in the slums of Calcutta India, to trekking the Himalayas, to living with tribal peoples deep in the jungles of Northern Laos, each experience held a lesson.
What I’ve Learned
While caring for a dying elderly man in Calcutta, I made a deep human connection with him in the last days of his life that turned out to be the most healing and profound experience of the entire journey. Despite his shocking physical appearance and our language barrier, I connected with this man and immediately all of my protective barriers were dissolved.
Trekking over 15,000ft passes in the Himalayas – along avalanche-covered trails without a guide – I learned valuable lessons about trusting my instincts, operating confidently (way out of my comfort zone) and tapped into a new level of courage and confidence that I had never known before.
In Laos, I fell in love with the pace of life. I learned to let go of my well-developed “type-A” personality need for control. The natural rhythms of the sunrise and sunset and even flow of life on the Makong River seduced me into learning how relax and slow down my naturally frenetic pace. I learned to live in the rhythms of much softer, kinder cultures.
Bringing Lessons Home
Upon returning home to the United States, I brought back with me more than just great memories and beautiful photos; I returned with a new and bigger way of living my life. I realized these real-life adventures had shaped me in ways that no CD, personal development book or workshop could. Suddenly, many of my simple life “problems” seemed to disappear, lost in the contrast of what I had experienced abroad. My ability to think outside the box and handle just about any challenge that came up had increased dramatically – thanks to the daily lessons of travel. And most importantly, I arrived back in the US with a whole new reference point, a whole new way of appreciating just how fortunate we are to have the opportunities we have here at home.
Leaving my career and heading out on this adventure to see the world taught me a new level of risk taking, courage, and self-esteem. I learned to trust myself, and to trust my instincts. As a result, I started to create more of what I wanted in my life. I started connecting with people on a much deeper level. I returned with a greater sense of purpose and my deep yearning to get out and really experience life was fully expressed.
After my return, I have continued to seek out experiences that provide a deep level of learning and a feeling of truly being alive. Amongst these adventures are rock climbing Half Dome in Yosemite, kayaking the sea of Cortez in Baja Mexico, big-wave tow surfing in Mexico, and I recently completed a 19-hour team endurance running race.

The “Big Secret”
For years, many people have told me that they live vicariously though me and my adventures. They say, “You are so lucky.” To that, I say two things:
It’s not about luck, it’s about making a choice, it’s about taking the first step.
I thank them and then propose the same challenge I offer you:
Why not start really living your life right now? With all of the change that is going on in our world, there has never been a better time. How much longer are you going to wait to really start living your life?
So, what’s the secret?
Just Begin.
Thank you for the opportunity to share a piece of my life with you. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to enjoy my life in a way few people do – and it is my greatest joy is to help people like you to do the same.
Sincerely, Jesse Gros
